Winfried (Peter Simonischek) is a 65-year-old music teacher who lives with his old dog and has a strong tendency to joke. His daughter Ines (Sandra Hüller) is a career woman who travels the world to optimize companies. She is currently working on a large outsourcing project in Romania and trying to make her mark in a male-dominated industry.
Since Winfried doesn’t see much of his daughter at home, he decides to spontaneously visit her after his dog’s death. But instead of a rapprochement, there is a scandal between the two. Only when a certain Toni Erdmann appears does the relationship between the two seem to improve.
With “Toni Erdmann” Maren Ade created one of the best German films of the 21st century and set new standards for tragic comedy.
