The daily incidence of coronavirus in Russia reached its maximum on October 14 – 31,299 new cases were recorded. This is 1,364 more than the record on December 24, 2020. Mortality has already reached 986 cases per day, and this is also the absolute maximum since the beginning of the epidemic. Regional authorities are massively introducing QR codes to visit public places, restrict catering and make vaccination mandatory for some groups of citizens. Experts believe that this will help avoid a lockdown. Doctors explain the increase in morbidity by better testing, seasonal ARVI and more aggressiveness of the Delta strain. The situation with mortality can be corrected only by vaccination, experts are unanimous.
At the peak
In Russia, on October 14, an absolute record was set for the daily incidence of coronavirus since the beginning of the epidemic – 31,299 new cases. Mortality from COVID-19 also reached its maximum values: 986 deaths per day… Until now, most of all new cases of coronavirus infection per day were recorded on December 24, 2020 – 29,935.
In Moscow and St. Petersburg, the incidence rates as of October 14 are not the highest for these regions.: 6,712 and 2,345 infected. In the capital in June, the number of new cases per day exceeded 9 thousand. In St. Petersburg, the peak in 2021 fell on October 11 – 2,931 infected.
But other regions are now reaching their maximum indicators. A steady increase in cases, for example, in the Voronezh region – there are already 657 cases on October 14, in the Crimea – 552, in the Volgograd region – 375, in the Tver region – 304, in the Kaliningrad region – 298, in the Kursk region – 256.
As for mortality statistics, it has been steadily growing since the summer. and on June 29, it surpassed the previous record of December 24 in 635 cases. By mid-October, this figure had grown by one and a half times. The leaders in the number of deaths per day are Moscow (72 cases as of October 14) and St. Petersburg (67 cases). 30 or more deaths per day are now recorded in 11 regions. A week ago (on October 7) there were nine such regions. Two weeks ago (September 30) – seven.
Into the iron gauntlets
Trying to contain the spread of infection and not bring the situation to a lockdown, the regional authorities are introducing anti-epidemic measures that are new for today, but already worked out in the past peaks of incidence. In the last 24 hours alone, dozens of such messages have been received from subjects.
So, in Kabardino-Balkaria, they announced restrictions on the work of public catering – it is suspended at night, and food courts are closed in the shopping and entertainment center… Since October 15, QR codes are introduced in the subject to visit catering and cultural establishments. In addition, weddings of more than 20 people are prohibited in the region if they are held on premises. This is stated on the website of the head of the republic.
The authorities of the Belgorod region have expanded the effect of QR codes in all public places… A in Khakassia, the compulsory vaccination against covid was expanded on employees of the spheres of food production, industry, construction, as well as specialists involved in work on a rotational basis, according to a statement on the website of the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor. Earlier in the region, civil servants, employees of trade and service enterprises, education, healthcare, housing and communal services, social protection and transport were obliged to vaccinate against coronavirus.

In the Bryansk region, the authorities announced their intention to ban the holding of mass sports, cultural and entertainment events… A in the Oryol region have already announced that from October 18 the extras will be canceled… Authorities Lipetsk region will suspend from October 15 medical examination of the population and professional examinations, said the local administration.
In the whole country the mask mode remains, and in most regions – a ban on events with more than 500 people… With an increase in the incidence since September 2021, the regions, one after another, began to announce the introduction of QR codes for visiting public places, mandatory vaccination for some population groups, and tightening control over the mask regime. In recent days, there have been reports of restrictions on planned hospitalization and the transfer to remote work of some of the employees.
The increase in the number of cases in statistics is an indicator that the coronavirus infection has begun to be better detected. You don’t need to be guided by him in order to realize the scale of the threat, Yevgeny Timakov, an infectious disease doctor, told Izvestia. It is much more important to consider the increase in mortality and the number of hospitalizations, he added. Mortality reflects the true number of seriously ill patients, the expert explained.
– What we see by this indicator is a real tragedy. The number of deaths is increasing day by day. The growth is due to the fact that our citizens have relaxed and do not want to fight the virus at all: they are not vaccinated, they do not use protective equipment., both barrier and internal. It is not the Ministry of Health or the headquarters that is to blame, but the attitude towards the threat of the population itself, ” the infectious disease specialist emphasized.

Today’s records are associated with the spread of the more dangerous Delta strain, low rates of vaccination and the fact that some people have already weakened their immunity after receiving the vaccine. Aleksandr Sokolov, a leading researcher at the Institute for Information Transmission Problems of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told Izvestia. As for the geography of the spread of the virus, although in the capital now the indicators are not record-breaking, the main increase in statistics is still given by it, the expert emphasized.
— If you look at the statistics for Russia without Moscow, you can see that the dynamics are rather slow. The reason for the surge is that we have already become accustomed to the coronavirus. Previously, in such a situation, all of Russia would have already been mobilized. If not in lockdown, then remotely for at least a third of employees and online for schools and institutes. Last year, these measures were taken in a much calmer situation, the expert noted.
Epidemiologist Eduard Shunkov is sure that, the authorities of Moscow and St. Petersburg responded adequately and in a timely manner to the increase in morbidity by banning attendance at public events… In addition, it is necessary to stimulate people to vaccinate, explaining in detail the need for this preventive measure, he said.
The seasonal factor makes its contribution to the statistics, because in autumn there is traditionally an increase in various ARVIs., Director of the Scientific and Clinical Center for Precision and Regenerative Medicine of the Institute of Fundamental Medicine and Biology of Kazan Federal University Albert Rizvanov told Izvestia. As for the measures taken, then uhIt may be effective to enter QR codes in the regionshe thinks.
“Perhaps it was necessary to act not so sharply, to introduce them gradually or to warn the population in advance,” he noted. – But what I see now in Tatarstan, these are the waiting lists for vaccinations. This means that the measure is working and will give its effect soon.

It is important that the introduction of QR codes as an incentive to get vaccinated will help to avoid new lockdowns, stressed Albert Rizvanov.
Most likely, over time, the virus will gradually lose its virulent properties and pathogenicity., added Eduard Shunkov. The causative agent of COVID-19 will take its place in the morbidity structure, but will not lead to massive outbreaks and epidemics, the expert concluded.
