It is one of the most controversial measures in the package of measures aimed at the housing sector that the Government presented last week: the creation of a “compulsory leasing regime”. The aim is for the State or municipalities to be able to requisition vacant and empty houses from private individuals in order to subsequently place them on the rental market, paying the owners the rent due for occupying the house. This Monday, the Government released some details of the measure, which provides that the owners have a deadline to respond to the State before the forced lease and can, before that, freely negotiate the conditions of a possible contract.
