The Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) ratified the call to the national teachers not to go to schools to teach face-to-face classes, until it is possible to hold a “sincere” dialogue with the Health and Education authorities to find a way out of the situation.
The president of the union, Eduardo Hidalgo, reiterated that 10 thousand teachers have been infected by COVID-19 and its variants, and that the ADP has ratified its position of not going to the classrooms due to the statements of the same president of the Dominican Medical College (CMD ), who yesterday expressed concern for the national health system.
“We are following the opinions of specialists. He (Senén Caba) says today (yesterday) that he is worried, that the health system of the Dominican Republic may really collapse. We are echoing that position of the Dominican Medical College, “he indicated.
He argued that with this position, the union is collaborating with the country’s health authorities, because in many hospitals there are no beds available for patients who arrive with the disease.
He asked the Minerd to spearhead a diagnostic plan applying PCR tests that allow them to have scientific data on what the reality is in terms of school and community health and, consequently, vaccination ”.
He clarified that the ADP has not sent teachers to not work, and assured that as a sign of this there are currently thousands of teachers who, on their own initiative, maintain contacts with students through WhatsApp groups and other digital platforms.
Hidalgo said that based on the diagnoses of the next few days and the bulletins of the Ministry of Public Health, on Wednesday, January 19, they will announce the actions to be taken on the ADP’s position that the educational community does not attend schools.
The PLD reacts to the issue
While the former Minister of Public Health, Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, declared that the population has lost confidence in the information on covid-19 provided by government authorities.
Sánchez Cárdenas, who is head of the Public Health Secretariat of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), blamed the health authorities of the current government for having abandoned the protocols designed and implemented during the last administration to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in educational facilities.
