Gabon takes big step to eighth finals

Gabon and Ghana drew 1-1 on Friday evening in the group stage of the Africa Cup. Gabon is taking a big step towards the eighth finals, but it does have three players who contracted a heart defect after a corona infection, including star player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

It was expected that Aubameyang, like teammates Axel Meyé and Mario Lemina, would return from quarantine for the game against Ghana, but according to the medical committee of the Gabonese Football Association, the three players have been diagnosed with a heart defect. Earlier in the day, Bayern Munich announced that Alphonso Davies also suffers from an inflamed heart muscle after a recent corona infection.

Without his three players with heart problems, Gabon quickly fell behind. Andre Ayew (18.) gave Ghana the lead, but in the end Jim Allevinah (88.) equalized. Joseph Paintsil (Racing Genk) came in for Ghana. Morocco remains group leader with six points, but Gabon is second with four points. Ghana has one point, the Comoros zero.
