What is African Queens: Njinga about?
This new docuseries from Executive Producer Jada Pinkett Smith explores the lives of renowned and iconic African queens.
The first season traces the life of Nzinga, the complex, fascinating and fearless warrior queen of Ndongo and Matamba who ruled over an area equivalent to modern-day Angola in the 17th century. As the nation’s first female leader, Nzinga earned recognition and respect for her ability to combine political and diplomatic skills with military prowess, becoming an icon of the resistance movement.
It’s a welcome development that Netflix is putting an important part of African history as the focus of one of their series. However, it remains to be seen with what level of detail, competence and authenticity.
