Ajax continues to impress with maximum points in Champions...

Ajax Amsterdam still has the maximum of points after five group matches. The Ajax players won 1-2 on the field of Besiktas, Sebastien Haller scored his eighth and ninth goal of this campaign as a substitute.

The team from Amsterdam led the way to the Hel van Besiktas as leader in group C with twelve out of twelve and a ticket for the 1/8th final. Punt win assured Ajax of a group win and that was the motivation to go for it, despite the many substitutions. But Besiktas also wanted to win in his last home game. The Turks were almost eliminated after four defeats, but wanted to save their honour. And that worked out pretty well at first. With the recovered Batshuayi on the bench, the Turks went in search of the opening goal. That came on the half hour when the ball was placed on the spot after intervention by the VAR. Rachid Ghezzal didn’t hesitate and pulled the trigger mercilessly.

The game continued to go back and forth with chances on both sides. Ajax put top scorer Sebastien Haller between the lines at half time. The French-Ivorian has scored seven times in the previous four games and also had two assists to his name. And he added two more goals in less than half an hour. He is also the first player ever to find his way to the nets nine times in his first five CL matches. First he worked an assist from Tagliafico against the ropes, moments later he was in the right place to give the visitors the lead from close by. Besiktas, with Batshuayi meanwhile between the lines, could not find the strength to strike back and suffered a fifth loss in a row. The battle for second place in the group is between Sporting CP and Borussia Dortmund who meet later in the evening in Portugal.

Early in the evening, Inter received Ukrainian Shaktar Donetsk in Group D. The visitors held out until halftime, also because the VAR rejected a goal by Lautaro Martinez. After the coffee, however, the spring broke. Edin Dzeko scored twice for the Milanese, guiding his team past Real Madrid to the top of the group standings, one point ahead of Real Madrid, who will face Sheriff Tiraspol later in the evening.
