Alexander Kristoff wants to show himself again at Intermarché-Wanty Gobert: "Last year it was not so nice racing"

With only two victories, both in the Deutschland Tour, Alexander Kristoff did not have a top season in 2021. In 2022 he wants to do better. “Last year it was not so nice racing”, he said on Friday at the media day of his new team Intermarché-Wanty Gobert. “But I hope to win games here again.”

Alexander Kristoff signed for one season with the team of Jean-Francois Bourlart. 34 he is now. “Last year I did think about my retirement,” he said. “In the first part of the season it was really bad. Then you wonder what you’re doing. In the end it went better and I won two more times. Now I have a contract for one year. Indeed, only one year. If I’m having such a bad season again, why continue? Then you better do other things in life”, he put into perspective. “Watch out, I’m still motivated, I really want to do well. I quickly felt at home here and I was warmly welcomed here. I feel that I will get the necessary support here in the classics.”

At UAE Team Emirates, the focus was mainly on the Tour de France. “And that’s pretty normal somehow,” he said. “When you have won with Pogacar, all the attention goes to him and his entourage. The classics were slightly less important. I had an excellent teammate with Matteo Trentin, but you can feel that the approach to the classics is different. These rates are important here. I already know who will surround me, who will support me. I also achieved very good results in Belgium, now I race in a Belgian team. This feels a bit like my second home.”

Kristoff won the Tour of Flanders in 2015, Milan-Sanremo in 2014 and Gent-Wevelgem in 2019. He finished third in Vlaanderens Mooiste in 2020 and 2019. “That was not far from the victory. It has not become easier to win with Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel. Classy, but I still hope. Maybe they’re missing out, they’re looking at each other too much. It is also a difficult race, look at last year when Van der Poel was in the lead with Asgreen. In the end, the Dane wins. I just hope I can ride top five in those classics, maybe top three and then win is not far away. You never know.”

And Kristoff also wants to return to the Tour de France. He has already won four stages there, but last season the focus was on the team around Pogacar and he did not participate. “I can ride the Tour here. There is a lot of responsibility on me in this team to get results. I feel that,” he finished. “But when I rode with Katusha I was also the big leader. This is not new. I can handle that.”
