Club Brugge will start a new chapter on Saturday with Alfred Schreuder as head coach. He gave his first press conference on Friday, resulting in a barrage of themes. The disappointment after the Golden Shoe, the seven points behind Union and the possible starting position of Buchanan: Schreuder was immediately allowed to go full. “Conceal fewer goals, and then we will catch up.”
The auditorium in the Belfius Basecamp was again quite full on Friday: we often knew otherwise. Alfred Schreuder’s first press conference on home soil was therefore noted. On Saturday he will make his official debut as head coach against Sint-Truiden, although the Canaries were never discussed. “I am looking forward to my first game. Not because it has been a year and a half since I was coach of Hoffenheim, but because I am coach of Club Brugge,” said Schreuder. The Dutchman can start that match with an almost fit core, because the corona complaints with blue-black are completely over. No one positive, no one in quarantine.
The journalists present wanted to know whether the disappointment after the Golden Shoe had been absorbed. “We briefly discussed it individually,” says Schreuder. “We’ll see tomorrow if the boys have handled that disappointment well. Let them show it on the field. Look: in life you have always failed. It’s about how you deal with it. Charles and Noa are going to respond with performance, or at least that’s what I expect. It’s fighting or letting you know. We need that mentality.”
Buchanan in de basis?
Club Brugge is seven points behind leader Union, and must therefore limit the damage for the Champions Play-Offs as much as possible. “But to be honest: that backlog doesn’t mean much to me now”, shrugged Schreuder. “The situation is what it is, there’s not much we can do about it. And that is especially important, how we are going to handle the situation on the field. First of all, we have to concede a lot less goals. If we can do that, we will catch up,” says Schreuder. “Of course there are still play-offs. Normally I don’t think that’s a fair system, but that’s a personal view. But this time they could be in our favor.”
Striking: Schreuder already revealed that newcomer Tajon Buchanan has a good chance of starting against STVV in the base. Much is expected of the Canadian, and his coach agrees that the wing attacker has already given his business card. “He left a very good impression at the training camp in Marbella”, nods Schreuder. “It was the first time I’ve seen him live. I think he is a very good player.” Whether he is the reinforcement that Club Brugge needed? “Tajon would be a reinforcement for any top club.”
