Alison Van Uytvanck meets Spanish qualifier in first round Australian Open

Alison Van Uytvanck (WTA 56) will meet Spanish qualifier Cristina Bucsa (WTA 160) in the first round of the Australian Open, the first grand slam tournament of the year that starts next Monday in Melbourne.

The organizers of the Australian Open have supplemented the schedule with the names of the qualifiers who could advance to the main draw, such as Bucsa. The Spanish has never met the 27-year-old Belgian number 2 on the circuit before.

Among the women, Elise Mertens (WTA 20) is the highest placed Belgian. Mertens, the 19th seed Down Under, will meet Vera Zvonareva (WTA 85) in the first round. The 37-year-old Russian was number 2 in the world in the distant past and reached the finals at Wimbledon and the US Open, among other things. Greet Minnen (WTA 84) looks Romanian Jacqueline Cristian (WTA 73) in the eye. Kirsten Fipkens (WTA 206) meets the Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo (WTA 35). Maryna Zanevska (WTA 81) finally competes for a place in the second round with the Slovenian Kaja Juvan (WTA 86).

Among the men, David Goffin (ATP 45) is the only Belgian in the main draw. He meets Briton Daniel Evans (ATP 26) in the first round.
