After the mandatory win against Estonia (4: 0) Austria’s U-21s in Tampere should follow up as the current leaders of the table. The Finns surprised Werner Gregoritsch’s weakened team (without Adamu, Wimmer, Klarer or Demaku) with an aggressive start. In 4-2-3-1 hardly any balls were held.
The first dangerous conclusion landed on the net: Skyttä stepped in the center, Greiml forged his shot untenable for goalkeeper Hedl (19th).
The two were two of a total of five Rapidlers in the starting line-up: Auer, Aiwu and Ballo were supposed to help with the turnaround, but still had to tremble when the home side hit a slat header.
Only after a (held) Mustapha header did the ÖFB team become more dangerous. Lustenau’s debutant Saracevic hit the bar, Aiwu headed right after the restart.
Skyttä was more efficient. Captain Daniliuc was only able to deflect a cross in the unfamiliar position on the right back, while Finland’s playmaker from Toulouse FC scored directly – 2-0 (58th). The Finns only played 1-1 in Azerbaijan and are not among the group favorites Croatia, Norway and Austria.
A rapid combination made it exciting again: Greiml headed Auer’s cross into the net to make it 2-1 (68th).
Then it went back and forth. In the finish, Austria opened up without being able to generate great pressure. Antman let Greiml get out and hit the corner and thus the decision – 3: 1 (86th).
Austria is only third in the table and needs a blatant increase in the two outstanding duels with the still flawless Croatians in order to have a chance of qualifying for the European Championship.
