Barty may not defend WTA Finals title, coach says

(Reuters) – World number one tennis player Ash Barty may not defend his title at the WTA Finals, the season-ending tournament, because of “ridiculous” playing conditions in Mexico and the timing of the competition, says coach Craig Tyzzer .

The WTA Finals, played by the top eight singles and top eight doubles in the rankings, was moved from Shenzhen to Guadalajara due to the Covid-19 pandemic and will start on November 8th.

Tyzzer said Barty, who won the 2019 edition of the event – the 2020 has been cancelled – could also compromise his preparations for the 2022 Australian Open if he plays in Mexico, as he would have to submit to a home quarantine of two weeks back to Australia.

“We just found out it’s in Mexico, 1,500 meters (above sea level), and they’re using balls without pressure,” Tyzzer told the Australian Associated Press on Wednesday.

“Balls without pressure just fly. It’s a ball that, if you use it under normal conditions, won’t bounce. It’s not the best advertisement for the best girls in the world to play something they’ve never done before.”

“In conditions where they’ve never played, in a country where they don’t play at altitude, I think it’s ridiculous. As a spectacle, it’s scary,” he fired.

Barty, who was knocked out in the third round of the US Open this month, is “physically and mentally exhausted,” Tyzzer said.

“(The WTA 1000) from Indian Wells (next month) is still on the radar, but it needs a break,” he added.
