With Denis Menochet, Isabelle Adjani and Hanna Schygulla in the casting.

The 72nd edition of the Berlin Film Festival, which will begin on February 10, will be opened with the new production of Francois Ozon titled Peter Von Kant and adapted from the play The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, who had already brought it to the screen in 1972. This film will be released 22 years later Water drops on burning stone, one of the director’s first features, also inspired by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and presented in Berlin in 2000. Peter Von Kant also marks Ozon’s return to the German capital, three years after winning the Grand Jury Prize there for Thanks to God in 2019.

Thank God: Ozon films with faith [Critique]

With Denis Menochet, Isabelle Adjani and Hanna Schygulla to its distribution, Peter Von Kant is described as “a tour de force on the concept of containment” by the organizers of the German festival. The film is freely adapted from the play, the plot of which revolves around the character of Petra von Kant, a famous fashion designer widowed by her first husband and divorced by the second. Petra lives with Marlene, stylist and assistant whom she likes to mistreat and humiliate like her slave. She then falls in love with Karin, a beautiful young woman of more modest origin to whom she offers to share her apartment and benefit from his support to get into modeling …

In this rewrite signed Ozon, Petra becomes Peter, with Denis Menochet in the role. The final pitch of the feature film remains to be discovered.

In any case, there will be changes for this edition: the organization will be mixed this year, but above all shortened, with part of its events in physics and another online. As described French film, “The Berlinale has changed its format and concept due to the pandemic: the festival will begin on February 10 with the opening night at the Berlinale Palast. Then, until February 16, the teams will personally present their films to the public and to accredited spectators at premieres in the various cinemas of the Berlinale The award ceremony for the Golden and Silver Bears, as well as the GWFF prize for best first film and the documentary prize will take place on the evening of February 16. L ‘event ‘Publishumstag‘, very popular in recent years, will be extended to four days, from February 17 to 20. There will be continuous screenings in all cinemas at the normal price of € 10. ” In addition, there are all the professional events (European Film Market, Berlinale Co-Production Market, Berlinale Talents and World Cinema Fund), which will go online. For the physical, it will be reserved for press conferences, photo calls and award ceremonies, in particular for the Honorary Bear on February 15.

Throughout the festival, wearing a mask will be required as well as a negative test to access the rooms, which will be restricted to a 50% gauge. In addition, no party will be organized, but film crews will be able to walk the red carpet at the Berlinale Palast or other venues. “With our new concept, we are fully concentrating on the cinematographic experience and reducing the formation of groups.
