TORONTO (AP) – Bo Bichette homered and drove in five runs, Robbie Ray struck out 13 in seven innings to lead the majors, and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-3 on Wednesday night.
Vladimir Guerrero hit a pair of doubles and scored twice, while compatriot Teoscar Hernández added an RBI single.
The Blue Jays improved to 13-2 in September and passed Boston and the New York Yankees in the contest for the first wild-card spot to the playoffs.
Later, the Red Sox faced the Yankees.
Tampa Bay fell for the fifth time in seven games. The Rays, leaders of the AL East, are 6-8 in September, after going 21-6 in August.
Ray (12-5) allowed one run and four hits to earn his fourth straight decision. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA with 91 fans since his last loss to Boston on July 21.
The loss went to Michael Wacha (3-5), who received six runs and seven hits in six innings. He walked three and struck out five.
For the Rays, Cuban Randy Arozarena 4-0, Yandy Díaz 4-1. The Dominicans Manuel Margot 4-1, Nelson Cruz 4-0.
For the Blue Jays, the Dominicans Guerrero 3-2 with two runs scored, Hernandez 4-1 with one RBI. Mexican Alejandro Kirk 4-0. Cuban Lourdes Gurriel 3-0.
