The delay in scheduling André Mendonça’s hearing in the Senate for the post of minister of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) is making President Jair Bolsonaro impatient.
According to him, who would be delaying the hearing would be the former president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (DEM-AP). “Three months in the oven, the name of André Mendonça. Alcolumbre is not allowing it, a person I helped in his election”, said Bolsonaro this Sunday, 10.
The president showed irritation with Alcolumbre’s attempt to block the nomination and stated that the senator can try to enter the presidency if he wants to nominate names to the STF.
“Who might not want it is the Senate floor, it’s not him. He can vote against. Now what he is doing is not being done. The nomination is mine. If he wants to nominate someone to the Supreme, he can nominate two. He’s running for president next year. In the first half of 2023, there are two vacancies for the Supreme Court, he can nominate two for the Supreme Court,” he said.
With the enlistment, Bolsonaro and Mendonça became Alcolumbre’s beggars. But the Senate does not seem to be in a hurry to approve the name of the former attorney general of the Union. The nomination took place on July 13th and so far there is no date set for the hearing.
In addition to Alcolumbre, the current president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, would also not be making any effort for the hearing. Bolsonaro’s impulsive attitudes and controversial statements are said to be leaving Pacheco upset and unwilling to help the president.
According to government officials, Bolsonaro is already looking for another “terribly evangelical” name to indicate if André Mendonça is not approved.
Bolsonaro will suffer a major defeat if Mendonça fails to reach the STF seat. It will be further proof that the president’s explosive manner pushes allies away and hinders his plans for the government.
