Boris Johnson says climate change isn’t a hippy issue ‘only for tree-hugging tofu-munchers’

BORIS Johnson tonight slapped down suggestions that climate change is a hippy issue only for “tree-hugging tofu-munchers”.

In a huge boost for The Sun’s Green Team campaign the PM said protecting the planet was an issue for everyone, as he begged UN leaders to commit to ambitious goals to make the planet go green or face ruin.

Climate change was leading to radicalisation and terrorism, people trafikking and boosting the drugs trade, making it the biggest threat to the planet today, he claimed.

It wasn’t a fringe issue that they could ignore anymore, he said.

The PM said: “I know there are people around the world who will say this is all kind of “green stuff” from a bunch of tree-hugging tofu munchers and not suited to international diplomacy and international politics.

“I couldn’t disagree more profoundly.”

Climate change “sends shockwaves of instability around the world” and was vital for political leaders to address now, before it’s too late, he told them.

The PM said: “If we don’t act now, when will we act?

“Whether you like it or not, it is a matter of when, not if, your country and your people will have to deal with the security impacts of climate change.”

Eco-warrior David Attenborough joined the PM’s plea, telling leaders global warming and climate changes were a threat to the security of the whole planet.

And it was only through cooperating together that we can secure the future of the planet for our kids and grandkids.

He said Britain’s hosting of COP26 in Glasgow this November “may be our last opportunity to make this step change” before the planet warms up too much for good, which can’t be reversed.

Boris wants to use the Glasgow summit to show the world Britain is leading on the green agenda.

He will use it, and the upcoming G7 meetings in Cornwall, to try and persuade other leaders to sign up to the net zero pledge by 2050.
