British Catrin Pugh (27) was involved in a serious bus accident in 2013 on her way to the French Alps: the brakes of the vehicle gave way, causing it to crash and catch fire. Since then, 96 percent of her body has been burned to the third degree. She was given one chance in a thousand to survive the horror crash and she did. Today she undresses to break the stigma surrounding scars and help fellow sufferers.

Catrin Pugh, who was in a coma for three months after the crash, then had to rehabilitate for four years and has already undergone two hundred operations, makes it a matter of posing nude on Instagram. “My scars make me special and unique. It’s the brushstrokes of my life and I’m in love with this painting,” Catrin Pugh told the BBC earlier this summer.

By showing her body, she wants to motivate other burn victims to accept their own bodies as well. She makes that clear under every post. “I’m not posting this to celebrate my curves,” reads the most recent snapshot in nude lingerie. “Well to appreciate some life-saving scars.”

“When you have third-degree burns on the waistline, they can immediately restrict blood flow and be fatal. In emergency situations, an escharotomy is often chosen. That’s a straight cut in the leg, torso, or arm to relieve pressure and allow for smooth circulation and ventilation. See that vertical scar that runs from my buttocks down my leg? That cut was one of the first things that saved me. I wouldn’t be here without this scar. I wouldn’t live this beautiful life! And that’s just one more reason why I love this body.”
