Carol photographs shelter dogs across the US — and in a few days finds them a home | photogalleries

Carol Arscott spends her days photographing dogs from various shelters across the United States and the goal is clear: to get someone to notice them and get them adopted. The idea, which she started eight years ago in partnership with an animal protection association in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, turned out to be a success, to the point of receiving requests from shelters across the country.

“Animals bring me joy. Photographing them is not work. It’s a way to alleviate the stress and also playtime”, he begins by explaining to P3.

With this joke, has photographed dozens of cats, birds, pigs and even horses, but when he works with shelters the vast majority of portraits are of dogs. In the sessions he did during the Christmas season alone, he photographed more than 300, most of whom are already seniors, with health problems, or who have been waiting longer for an owner. “Most are adopted within days of publishing the photos,” he says.

In each image, Carol intends to “show the personality” of the animals in gardens, rivers and even parking lots. “I want people to imagine what it would be like to have that dog or cat as a member of your family. Instead of [fotografar] a dog in a carrier or in a shelter room, I show him outside, playing, running, holding a ball or standing proud and ready to go to his new home”, he adds.

The American, who he also adopted two dogs and a cat that he photographed, created facebook page Rescue for Rescues where he teaches and guides people to capture images like his. “I tell them where the dog should be so the lighting is better. When everything is right, I take the picture by clicking a button on my computer and then I can edit it.”

Carol has the dream of photographing animals that are in associations in the rest of the world. ANDUntil that day comes, work on the book cProceeds will go to Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue.

Photographer João Azevedo has a similar project in Portuguese shelters and associations, Be My Friend. It’s worth looking into Instagram account.
