The complete vaccination rate against covid-19 reached 39% in Latin America and the Caribbean, reported this Wednesday (13th) the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), which issued a warning about the most backward nations.

According to Carissa Etienne, director of PAHO, at a press conference, six countries in the region do not have 20% of their population immunized: Guatemala and Nicaragua in Central America and Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines in the Caribbean.

In these countries, coronavirus vaccination was limited by an uneven dose distribution and specific problems.

In Guatemala, for example, the shortage of syringes has delayed immunization campaigns, while in Haiti, logistical difficulties weigh heavily. In addition, across the Caribbean, people’s reluctance to get vaccinated remains very high, according to PAHO.

For Etienne, it is “encouraging” that 26 of the 51 countries and territories in the Americas already have 40% or more of their population immunized against the virus.

But she insisted that some will need “special attention” to vaccinate 40% of its inhabitants by the end of the year, a goal launched last week by the World Health Organization (WHO).

“We must work together and support each other so that every country in the Americas can reach or exceed” this goal, said Etienne.

PAHO indicated that infections and deaths recorded in general are decreasing in the region of the Americas, with peaks in some nations.

In the United States, infections reported in the Midwest and Alaska stand out. In Canada’s Northwest Territories, contagion rates are 10 times the national average. Belize and Barbados reported a large number of cases in the Caribbean.

In South America, infections continue to fall, but they have increased in the metropolitan region of Caracas and in areas of southern Chile.
