Corona: about four vaccination breakthroughs for every 1,000 vaccinated

The effectiveness of the corona vaccinations is very high, but as with all drugs and vaccinations, it is not 100 percent. According to the latest data from the agency for Bless you and Food Security (AGES) so far, 5,308,515 people with full vaccinations reported a vaccination breakthrough with Covid-19 symptoms in 21,779. For every 1,000 fully vaccinated people, there are around four people with a breakthrough vaccination.

Since the beginning of February 2021, 21,779 cases of a total of 215,234 laboratory-confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections with clinical symptoms among people aged twelve and over had been fully vaccinated in Austria, that is 10.1 percent. Within the past four calendar weeks, 10,189 cases of the 30,270 symptomatic laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection cases occurred that were fully vaccinated. At 33.7 percent, this proportion is higher than in the entire period of the vaccination campaign, but according to AGES it is to be expected that the more vaccinated population increases, there will be more vaccination breakthroughs.

Vaccination protects

If the proportion of vaccinated people in the population increases, then the probability also increases that among the people who are infected with SARS-CoV-2 or are infected with it, there are vaccinated people. The number of breakthroughs also depends on the number of active cases. The more active cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection there are in the population, the higher the probability of being infected as a vaccinated person, informed the AGES.

The vaccination protects against the disease, the environment of the vaccinated and in the case of Covid-19 disease usually leads to a milder course of the disease. The AGES emphasized that difficult courses, hospital stays, stays in intensive care units and illnesses with a fatal outcome can largely be avoided. Calculations of the Bless you Österreich GmbH (GÖG) according to the Covid vaccination avoided 13,110 hospital stays, 3,587 stays in intensive care units and 4,153 deaths across Austria from the beginning of February to October 18.
