BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) – Argentina’s Interior Minister Eduardo “Wado” de Pedro presented his resignation on Wednesday, the government’s first high-level casualty after a painful electoral defeat for the ruling party in the election primaries. mid-term on Sunday.

De Pedro was one of the most senior officials allied with the more radical Kirchnerist wing of Alberto Fernández’s center-left government, which faces a battle to win back moderate voters ahead of November’s midterm election.

In a letter to President Fernández circulated by the ministry, De Pedro said he was presenting the resignation to help the government move forward towards the vote and regain the support of the electorate.

“Listening to your words on Sunday night, when you mentioned the need to interpret the verdict expressed by the Argentine people, I consider that the best way to help this task is to put my resignation at your disposal,” he wrote.

The resignation of De Pedro, a crucial ally of powerful Vice President Cristina Kirchner, has not yet been formally accepted by Fernández.

The ruling Frente de Todos coalition, whose popularity wanes during the pandemic, was beaten hard on Sunday in primaries, which are seen as a credible indicator of how the midterm election will go.

Local media reported that other officials may also resign, but Reuters was unable to confirm this information immediately.
