Ashling Murphy was 23 years old, an elementary school teacher and was doing sports when she was mugged last Wednesday afternoon.

According to one BBC report the attack occurred in the Irish city of Tullamore (just under 90 kilometers west of Dublin). Out of nowhere, a stranger attacked the young teacher, causing her serious injuries. When two women noticed the incident, the perpetrator fled.

The alerted police rushed to the scene and although the 23-year-old was still alive when the rescue workers arrived, any help came too late. Ashling Murphy passed away, turning it into a murder case.

According to the police, the alleged killer is said to have struck alone. More than 50 investigators are working to solve the case and they want “to leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrator of this crime to justice”.

An autopsy of the corpse has already been carried out, but for investigative reasons the results should remain secret. The police have meanwhile released a photo of a black and green bicycle that is believed to be linked to the crime and are asking witnesses for clues.

The police had even caught a first suspect in the meantime. The 40-year-old had to be released because he apparently had nothing to do with the attack.

So the investigation continues while Ireland has to digest the crime first. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said: “The whole country is deeply dismayed and shocked by this violent and barbaric murder.” There is “no place in society for violence, especially not for violence against women”.

Ashling Murphy started teaching at Durrow National School in March 2021, where she last taught a first class. She was considered a happy person and a talented musician.

According to director James Hogan, the whole school community is still numb at the bad news. The 23-year-old was “fantastic, an extraordinary athlete and an inspiration”.
