The Colombian cyclist Daniel Martínez (INEOS) won this Sunday the 49th edition of the Volta ao Algarve, by being fourth in the individual time trial of the fifth and final stage, won by the Swiss Stefan Küng (Groupama-FDJ).
Martínez, 26 years old, set the fourth best time of the day, 16 seconds below the 29m34s achieved by Küng, fastest in the 24.4 kilometers disputed in Lagoa, ahead of Frenchman Rémi Cavagna (Soudal-QuickStep), second, at four seconds, and the Italian Filippo Ganna (INEOS), third, 10 seconds away.
Overall, the Colombian was two seconds ahead of Hour record holder Filippo Ganna, his teammate, in second place, with Belgian Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-QuickStep) in third place, 15 seconds behind the winner. João Almeida (UAE Emirates) ended up as the best Portuguese, in sixth, 40 seconds away.
The Colombian, who had been third in 2022, succeeds the Belgian Remco Evenepoel, who had triumphed in the race last year for the second time, after a first victory in 2020.
