Sonneberg – The traditional East German company Piko benefits in the Corona-pandemic. Despite delivery problems!
The market for small trains and accessories developed positively again last year, said the managing partner of Piko Spielwaren GmbH, René Wilfer, on Thursday at the company’s headquarters in Sonneberg, southern Thuringia.
This trend can be seen in the sales development of Piko with an increase of 12.3 percent compared to 2020.
In addition to experienced model railroaders who added or expanded their systems, there were again many newcomers to the hobby with small locomotives and wagons. In the USA, demand and sales have increased significantly.

The increase in sales was achieved despite problems with electronic components with long transport times, said the Piko boss. The duration of a container delivery from China to Europe has increased from six to currently ten weeks, while costs have risen at the same time.
According to Wilfer, Piko is aiming for an eight percent increase in sales for 2022. The company produces in Sonneberg as well as at a location in China.
