Despite successes with the Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh, Elise Mertens opts for a new doubles partner. From 2022, the Hamontse will work with the Russian Veronika Kudermetova with a completely different type of player.
Elise Mertens (WTA 21) does have plans in doubles, but no longer with Su-Wei Hsieh (WTA 106). With the experienced Taiwanese, the Hamontse recently played the final of the Masters and earlier this season she won Wimbledon, among other things.
Mertens now opts for a new wind: Russian Veronika Kudermetova (WTA 31) will become her new partner. It is clear that Mertens opts for a player with a completely different style than Hsieh, who has to rely more on tactical elements and feeling. Kudermetova adds plenty of power.
The playing style of the duo will again be closer to the period when Mertens had the Belarusian Sabalenka at her side. Moreover, it will not be the first time that Mertens and Kudermetova doubles together. Earlier this year, the two already formed an occasional duo in Istanbul. That collaboration was such a success that the two immediately took the top prize and clearly wanted more. So that’s the sequel.
What also played a part: Su-Wei Hsieh’s main concerns are doubles, but not that of 24-year-old Kudermetova. The Russian also wants to excel in singles. Mertens shares the same philosophy. Next season Mertens will mainly focus on singles – in singles she is currently just outside the top twenty, in doubles she is number four in the world. Her entourage is also supplemented by a fitness trainer who will travel more with her on the track.
