A 29-year-old motorist drove into one of the infamous flower boxes around 3 a.m. on Saturday morning that are supposed to slow down traffic when entering the center of Herenthout.
A week ago, the visual effects artist Jeroen Echelpoels from Herenthout managed to amaze his fellow villagers with his edited scene from soap Home, in which a car crashes into the flower box in the Molenstraat. The video was completely fake, but a full week later it actually happened.
The 29-year-old Grobbendonkenaar SD collided with the similar flower box on the Bouwelse Steenweg around 3 am on Saturday morning. The large metal flower box was thrown off by the impact and ended up on its side on the footpath a few meters further. “The driver was uninjured, but a breath test showed that he had been drinking quite a bit,” said a spokesman for the Neteland police zone. “His driver’s license was immediately revoked for 15 days.”
The municipal services must see in the coming days whether the flower box can still be repaired, or whether they should place another one. Last year, the municipal authorities placed flower boxes in the inbound lane on a number of major approach roads to the village center, so that inbound traffic has to wait until the outgoing vehicles have passed.
