Many ended the cycle of computers in the face of the unstoppable rise of phones and tablets. This prediction was followed by a season of almost unrecoverable sales. However, thanks to the pandemic, the history of notebook and PC ended 2021 with an unexpected chapter of successes.

The telecommuting boom caused sales to increase notably and 2021 has turned out to be a record year for the computer segment (where PCs and notebooks are) with global sales growing 14.6% and in which all manufacturers have obtained significant gains.

The computer market ended 2021 with its arms raised, as fourth-quarter shipments exceeded 90 million for the second year in a row.

“That the market registers double-digit growth during 2020, despite the constant cloud of supply constraints, speaks volumes about how strong the demand for PCs has been in the last 12 months. Taking a long-term view, the biggest developments in 2021 were the big increases in PC usage and penetration rates. PCs are now in the hands of both young students and older family members, while ownership of two or more PCs per person has become more common in developed markets, ”says Ishan Dutt, Senior Analyst at Canalys.

In addition to the factors mentioned, there were other variables that contributed to this growth. The most prominent was the appearance of new components, the definitive rise of gaming and Twitch or the appearance of Windows 11.
