As explained by President Iván Duque, in the middle of a military promotion ceremony, there will be “10 lines of action” in which work will be done to “deepen the modernization of the Ministry of Defense and the comprehensive transformation of our National Police”.
That process, according to the head of state, seeks to “strengthen DD policy. H H.” and raising “standards in the provision of service to the citizen,” a situation that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) will evaluate in a possible visit it requested for next June 7.
Among the most significant changes that Duque mentioned, and that seek to “achieve excellence”, are that of create a new disciplinary statute, reform the General Inspection of the Police, create a system for receiving complaints and reports and “improve the conditions of the members of the institution.”
“To continue advancing in the process of a Police closer to the citizen, we will strengthen the education and training of its men and women. We will implement professional standards on issues such as use of force, human rights, citizen service and police procedures. We will review Police protocols for the legitimate use of force and we will give them strict compliance, ”added the Colombian president.
Among the other advances that the Head of State gave, a change of uniform for the Police stands out, which from now on will be blue, a project that will be for the use and trade of traumatic weapons, and an internal change in the Ministry defense.
This portfolio will be renamed the Ministry of National Defense and Citizen Security, and will have changes such as the creation of the Vice Ministry of Defense Policies and the Police Education Directorate, “to strengthen professional programs of the highest quality.”
