“There is a car transport between the exit and the driveway where a fire started. This is accompanied by a strong smoke development,” says Peter Bruyninckx of the Flemish Traffic Center. The fire started after the truck suffered a blowout around 5 p.m.
The truck came to a stop on the rush-hour lane on top of the Wommelgem roundabout. The fire spread rapidly and caused flames to be meters high. Fortunately no one was injured.
A military police motorbike drove just past the scene of the accident and decided to completely close the highway for the safety of other motorists. The roadway is currently still completely blocked for the extinguishing work. Traffic must leave the highway via the Wommelgem exit.
Due to the incident, in combination with the evening rush hour, traffic jams in the region are of course growing rapidly. On the E17 it is queuing from Kruibeke, on the Antwerp Ring it is queuing up to Antwerp-North. It also goes slowly on the E19 and A12 until the connection to the Ring.
Long-distance traffic from Ghent to Hasselt or from Antwerp to Liège is recommended to drive via Brussels. From Antwerp to Hasselt it is best to take the E19 via Brussels.
