López Obrador offered Cuban President Díaz-Canel yesterday to lead a more active movement in favor of lifting the US economic blockade on the island.
Mexico City, February 12 (However).- The Chancellor Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón ruled out this Sunday morning that the proposal of President Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador about asking the United States to remove the blocking economical to Cuba create tension between Joe Biden government and the Mexican.
In an interview from the Campeche airport, after having fired Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, the Foreign Minister said: Mexico and the United States are “allies”, but they do not have “identical interests”, for which the Mexican Government will promote that the economic blockade in Cuba be lifted.
“I don’t think [que generé tensión]. Mexico has maintained this position since 1962, so I am going to say it like this, Mexico and the United States are allies, but we do not have identical interests, ”he said in the meeting with the media.
“What do we think? What the President proposes [Andrés Manuel] Lopez Obrador. Let’s leave the past behind, lift this type of blockade and try to create a fraternal coexistence in the Americas”, said the Foreign Minister.
Likewise, Ebrard mentioned that due to the good relationship that exists with the United States Government, he would not expect that promoting the lifting of the blockade would change that relationship. “That one country should tell another what to do, is what we do not agree on. I see a very good relationship with the United States, I would not expect that to change and we also have a very good relationship with Cuba as we have with Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia, Honduras and Chile”, he expressed.
Yesterday, President López Obrador, when heading the “Mexico-Cuba Bilateral Meeting, IMSS Health-Welfare”, in the state of Campeche, reiterated his support to lead a fight with other countries for the elimination of the commercial blockade maintained by the United States.
He insisted on the issue of the “inhumane” blockade against Cuba and promised to lead a movement with other countries to lift it.
“That is why our respect, gratitude and support, and we are going to continue demanding that the blockade against Cuba be eliminated, which is inhumane, and not only when it comes to voting at the UN, because you always win, most countries are because the lock is removed, but the assembly passes and returns to the same thing. I offer the President of Cuba that Mexico is going to lead a more active movement so that all the countries unite and defend the independence and sovereignty of Cuba; and nothing to treat them as a terrorist country or put them on the black list of alleged terrorists, they are the people and a government that is profoundly humane. Long live the dignified people of Cuba!” López Obrador said.
The President had already declared himself to lift the blockade on Cuba in his speech when he awarded Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle in the collar grade.
“As a sign of good will, that we are willing to unite, from all the countries of America, I consider, and I express it with respect, that the Government of the United States must lift the unfair and inhumane blockade of the people as soon as possible. of Cuba”, said the President hours before in the archaeological zone of Edzná.
During his six-year term, which began in 2018, López Obrador has maintained close cooperation and unrestricted support for Cuba in condemning the United States trade embargo.
In 2021, after protests in which thousands of Cubans took to the streets to demonstrate against the shortage of basic goods and power cuts, the Mexican government sent medicines, food and fuel to the island in what represented the greatest support in humanitarian aid in decades, only comparable to that offered in the time of Carlos Salinas de Gortari (1988-1994) when Cuba was experiencing the crisis caused by the collapse of the Soviet bloc.
It is a very high honor to receive the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle, a decoration that symbolizes the origin, identity and strength of this endearing nation.
I receive it with humility and infinite gratitude, aware that the true deserving party is the heroic Cuban people. pic.twitter.com/Lw8GIhk2ZI

Mexico was the only country in Latin America that never broke relations with Cuba after the triumph of the revolution, from where, in fact, the bearded leader Fidel Castro left to assemble his guerrilla group, who in 1988 also received the Order of the Aztec Eagle.
However, from the late 1990s until the presence of López Obrador, the once unbreakable ties began to crack, especially to the extent that rulers like Vicente Fox revalued their relationship with the United States.
