1899 (Netflix): this unexpected object that inspired the series

Thursday November 17, 2022, Netflix unveiled its new series called 1899. The opportunity to discover how the creators of Dark decided to design this new story.

More than two years after the end of the series Dark, its creators are back on Netflix, with a new creation. baptized 1899the series unveiled on Thursday, November 17 tells the story of several passengers stuck in a liner facing a ghost ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. And if this time the creators Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese have decided to tell a less complex story, the project is again very ambitious. In fact, it incorporates actors from different backgrounds in a universe mixing metaphysics and science fiction.

In an interview given to ParisianJantje Friese explained about the cast : “When Europe found itself confronted with the migrant crisis, when Brexit took place, we wanted to give birth to a European creative space where we could all work together in harmony. It was also an opportunity to put Europe under the microscope thanks to protagonists from various countries, in a confined space, with only the ocean around“.

The series was created from a mysterious photo

If the series 1899 was entirely imagined by Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, one element largely inspired them at the beginning. In her interview, the screenwriter and showrunner revealed: “While researching, we had come across a rather old photo of a man on a boat, covered in blood, hammer in hand, with a very strange look. Right away, we asked ourselves a thousand questions: where does it come from, what is it fleeing from, what happened on this boat?“.

Thanks to that mysterious picture, a whole story could be developed and then produced on screen. If Netflix has not yet confirmed that a second season is in preparation, the creators of the series hope to be able to develop their story on three seasons of eight episodes.
