Ernst Jacobi was a welcome face on German TV and on theater stages. He became famous with the film adaptation of Günther Grass’ novel “The Tin Drum”. In it he played the role of Gauleiter Löbsack. The actor has now died at the age of 88, as his management announced to the German Press Agency on Thursday. He fell asleep peacefully.

Jacobi began his career in theater in the 1950s. After graduating from high school, he completed his acting training in Berlin, and later also took classes in Paris. From Berlin he was drawn to the Burgtheater in Vienna and the Schauspielhaus in Zurich.

He was also seen on television for decades: he embodied well over 200 TV roles. A few years ago he appeared in smaller roles, for example in “Rote Rosen” or in “Tatort”. He played his last role in 2017 in “Polizeiruf 110”, since then he has lived in seclusion.

His death shocked many fans. On Twitter they say goodbye to the popular actor. “The German voice of Dr. Emmett Brown (from the first part) has died. I’m about to let the film run in his honor today. It was Ernst Jacobi who taught us all “1.21 gigawatts” writes a user.
