A significant change in the economy, in production, in local tourism, in the road infrastructure and in the positive attitude of the people, is what is perceived in the province of Hato Mayor, which in recent years has managed to come out of the first place in the poverty index in the country.
The investments of local businessmen, the formation of small groups of producers, the individual work of men and women, the support of the different governments, especially in these two years of administration by President Luis Abinader, who has started a series of works, have helped to consolidate the progress that is already being seen in the region.
The main municipality, Hato Mayor del Rey, is a small but beautiful city, clean and well organized. Its streets, although a bit narrow, look well cared for, likewise the houses, buildings and businesses that surround the majestic park that crowns the town.
An exuberant greenery completely surrounds the entire city, you don’t have to go far to see the large plantations of cocoa, coconut, banana, etc., as well as the great production of oranges, tangerines, cherries and passion fruit, which make this province in the citrus capital.
Leaving the town center you will see large farms with cattle, as well as horses and goats, but also men working the land to put it into production. You will also see large wooden buildings that in their time were the houses to house the laborers who work in the cane cutting.
Residents of one or other communities belonging to the province did not miss the opportunity to complain that in spite of everything there is still a lack of roads, drinking water, jobs and more investment in primary health, which is very deficient.

A commission from the El Coco community of the Mata Palacios municipal district is asking the provincial authorities and the central government to repair local roads, lighting, transportation for children, home repairs, and fumigation in the sector.
“There is no doubt that this president has noticed this town, since he is building roads and bridges with a lot of money, but they must also do things in these sectors that nobody remembers,” said Mario Reyes, a farmer.

Possibly the reconstruction of the Hato Mayor-Sabana de la Mar highway is one of the most anticipated and celebrated works by the residents of Hatomayor due to the importance that results from the reduction in the time to get from one place to another and the facilities that tourism and the transport of goods and products in the area.
Nearly 2,000 million pesos are invested in the 41-kilometre stretch of road between the two aforementioned towns, and other road infrastructure works such as: construction of the bridge over the Sansón river, the Sabana de la Mar-Caño Hondo, the construction of gabion walls on the Yerba Buena bridge (completed), among other works.
Although in the report of Economy, Planning and Development, of 2015 based on the statistical data of the years 1993, 2002, 2010, the Province of Hato Mayor appears in the first 7 places of the provinces with the highest rate of poverty, at present it is not like that, which shows in progress that it has been acquiring this demarcation.
Little by little, this province is incorporating places that become tourist attractions that motivate visits from people from all over, among the most visited sites are: the Bay of San Lorenzo, and the Rancho Capote project, consisting of three caverns, the Tours del Chocolate, and the Trapiche del Coco among other places.
Hato Mayor also has Colinas del Rey and Isabela Park water parks, Los Haitises National Park, El Salto de Yanigua, La Cueva de Doña Ana, Cueva de Fun-Fun, and all the extraordinary vegetation, mangroves, birds that surround the whole area.
This was the reason that the province received the qualification as an ecotourism region through the decree that promulgates Law 77-02, which legalizes this measure ordered by the Executive Power.
According to accounts, the name of this province was given during the Spanish colonization, since a large part of these lands were destined mainly for raising cattle or herds, this being the largest in the region, owned by the Spanish Crown, being its first owner King Carlos I of Spain.
