1996’s Independence Day was an incomparable blockbuster with Matrix effects. A Milestone that revolutionized cinema and which within a generation everyone knew. Director Roland Emmerich was suddenly known to everyone.

But when the sequel appeared 20 years later, the air was gone. Avatar’s technology had turned flying saucers into stair jokes. Green men have only found success alongside Marvel heroes. And that said nothing about the sequel itself.

Many critics thought that Independence Day 2 was a good one formulaic sequel with no emotional depth (via Rotten Tomatoes ). Will Smith was absent. And even if the technology is impressive and the cast around Bill Pullman makes every effort, it’s not enough for the unique bombast effect of the predecessor.

Accordingly, the box office results looked poor (via Box office mojo ). When LRM Online Producer Dean Devlin asked about a third part in 2018, he only replied: “I do not know. Currently I personally no plans to do another part. This status has apparently not changed so far.
