Landscapers: Olivia Colman and David Thewlis incredibly infrequent (review)

A true crime drama “so” British, “so” delightful, which lands this evening in France on Canal +.

Sordid and pathetic, touching and romantic, Olivia Colman and David Thewlis form a deadly duo for a deliciously macabre true story. If you’re fed up with true crime dramas which are breaking and which all look alike, don’t skip it! Landscapers will reconcile you with gender. This crazy new series, inspired by a real news item that shook England in the 1990s, is a marvel of cynicism, mystery, and above all, sordidly fascinating people…

The story takes us back to the footsteps of an old, polite and well-bred British couple, to whom the Queen herself would surely give the Good Lord without confession. Susan and Christopher Edwards look like they’re straight out of Paddingtonexcept that they have been hiding the murder of Susan’s parents for 15 years, whom they buried in the garden before fleeing to France, to start a new life…

Landscapersit’s first of all a hell of a duo: Olivia Colman and David Thewlis are amazing in Bonnie & Clyde unfathomable, alternately adorable and poisonous. Their exceptional performances border on a brilliant absurdity, which is matched only by the soft darkness that invades this investigation, slowly, insidiously. We let ourselves be enveloped by this fluffy wickedness, which gets darker, from interrogation to interrogation, from macabre revelations to morbid discoveries.

A commedia dell’arte skillfully orchestrated, and dramatized in a wonderfully inventive way. With a unique enigmatic style, Landscapers traces the thread of the truth with a pleasing visual ambition, intelligently juggling, at each end credits of the episode, with the English TV reports of the time, which put into perspective all the good we want to think of these fictional Susan and Christopher, as they turn out to be endearing, despite everything…

In four small episodes, the series manages to break the rules of the genre and pay homage to it at the same time. A criminal madness not to be missed.

Landscapers broadcast in France on Canal + and My Canal from June 13, 2022.
