Matthijs van Nieuwkerk is participating in the research that the NPO has carried out into the working conditions at the TV program The world goes on (DWDD). This is what his spokesperson says.
The NPO announced last week that an external party will conduct an independent investigation into this. DWDD was last aired in 2020. There will also be an action plan in which the NPO and the various broadcasters jointly determine what is needed to create a safe working environment.
Former presenter Van Nieuwkerk was discredited last week after a publication de Volkskrant. It emerged that Van Nieuwkerk and a number of editors-in-chief had been guilty of transgressive behavior on the TV program for years and that the management of the broadcaster did not intervene despite reports of this.
The NPO remains the client of the investigation, despite criticism from the Media Authority that this could lead to questions about independence. This has to do with the role of NPO director Frans Klein. He was previously involved as media director of BNNVARA in DWDD. Klein has temporarily resigned from his duties pending the investigation.
Van Nieuwkerk broke his ties with BNNVARA this week. The broadcaster has all former employees of DWDD offered help.
