The Austrian film festival Diagonale will again be run by a duo in the future. The curator Claudia Slanar and the “Standard” film critic Dominik Kamalzadeh will take over the management of the festival. They were designated for the years 2024 to 2027 and succeed Peter Schernhuber and Sebastian Höglinger, who have been running the film festival since 2015 and have not applied for another period.
Claudia Slanar, born in 1972, has been working as a curator of the Ursula Blickle Video Archive since 2014 and has been responsible for the programming and administration of the Blickle cinema at Belvedere 21 in Vienna since 2017. Since 2015 she has been a member of the selection committee for the Diagonale competition in the field of innovative cinema.
Dominik Kamalzadeh, born in 1973 and working as a culture editor and film critic for the daily newspaper “Der Standard”, was responsible for various curatorial film programs, for example at the Linz film festival Crossing Europe, at the Arsenal in Berlin or in cooperation with the Viennale.
“The Diagonale is not only the most important film festival for Austrian film, but also an important place for relevant discussions within the industry,” said Dominik Kamalzadeh when asked by KURIER: “We want to strengthen the exchange between the audience and the industry.” That’s how you can do it “Continue debates that started in Graz in Vienna,” says Claudia Slanar.
The diagonal should take on a kind of “bridging function and offer space for discussion”, the newly elected artistic director wants. Cultural upheavals – from #MeToo to a stronger internationalization of Austria as a film location – can be discussed intensively there, also increasingly in exchange with international guests.
