Rian Johnson loves Star Wars even more since filming The Last Jedi

“What frustrates me is that people have had the impression that I had had a bad, even traumatic experience. Whereas the reality is that it was completely joyful, even at the end, these last years, once it has been received.”

This summer, Rian Johnson explained be “even prouder” of the Last Jedi five years after its creation. In full promotion of Glass Onion: A Tale at Daggers Drawn 2the screenwriter and director now explains to the New Yorker that he loves the saga even more Star Wars since shooting this blockbuster for Disney-Lucasfilm. At the question : “Are you still excited to watch new content from this saga” (which is currently developing mainly in series, on Disney +), he gets carried away: “Oh fuck! Yes. My God, definitely. I think I like even more Star Wars now. What frustrates me is that people have had the impression that I had had a bad, even traumatic experience. Whereas the reality is that it was completely joyful, even in the end, for the past few years, once it was received.”

Episode 8 has indeed particularly divided the fans of the saga, as they played with the myth. Rian Johnson fully embraces this bias, and says he hasn’t been personally affected by the negative reviews. “No, when I read comments from people who say: ‘I completely disagree with that.’, I think they are wrong. For me anyway. Everyone can love or hate whatever they want. with fans of Star Wars in particular – I grew up being one of them, so bickering, expressing conflicting opinions, finding people wrong – that’s part of the experience. I never felt hurt. Mode: ‘Oh no ! I didn’t make a real movie Star Wars !’ On the contrary, I find that it is. ‘I made one.’

Following this experience, Rian Johnson had been announced at the helm ofa new trilogy Star Wars, but this project has since been on stand-by. We know that Lucasfilm is developing several feature films in this universe, including one designed by Taika Waititi (the latest Thor) and another by Patty Jenkins (wonder woman). Recently, Shawn Levy (Stranger Things, Deadpool 3) and Damon Lindelof (Lost) are also courted by the studio. But the priority for the moment is to develop this universe in streaming. Series Andor is currently being broadcast, then will come Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte…As well as season 3 of The Mandalorianthe one that relaunched the machine on Disney+, in 2019.
