"The best action film in years": Top Gun 2 starring Tom Cruise is raving reviews

The action staging of Top Gun 2 is legendary even before the cinema release. The sequel to the 80s classic Top Gun – They fear neither death nor the devil deliberately positions itself as an alternative to synthetic CGI superhero cinema. Powerful, “real” and therefore breathtaking action sequences promise reports like this one about the daring stunts.

Superstar Tom Cruise and his seemingly indestructible body are fittingly included in the sequel. Already the Twitter reactions praised Top Gun 2: Maverick as the perfect blockbuster. The first reviews are sometimes even more euphoric. We have collected the votes.

RogerEbert.com calls Top Gun 2 a movie that “defying gravity and logic”. The critic praises Tom Cruise’s star presence. “However, the action sequences – all the low-level flights, the dogfights, and also Cruise in the original Top Gun leather jacket on a motorcycle – are equally the stunning stars of Maverick.”

Of total film comes this sentence that fuels anticipation: “No cynicism, just sentimentality dosed to the point and sparkling set pieces. Top Gun: Maverick hits its two goals exactly: nostalgia and adrenaline.”

A superlative as powerful as the action in Top Gun 2 probably packs TheTelegraph out of: “Exciting, moving and gloriously cruisey: Joseph Kosinski’s sequel to the 1986 hit is unquestionably the best studio action film in years.”

The action gets rave reviews from almost all critics. Same with Empire : “Joseph Kosinski creates mind-blowing flight sequences that get the blood pumping.”

Thanks to Cruise and Kosinski’s undisguised drive for hands-on filmmaking and their rejection of CGI effects, their sequel feels like a throwback to a bygone era in more ways than one. But the era that produced the first film has shifted and Top Gun: Maverick is poignant in both subtle and overt waysthan acknowledging the passage of time, the fading of youth, and the shifting of his own status as a pop culture phenomenon.

The worst reviews on Meta Critic currently correspond to a score of 60 percent, so they are still satisfactory. Overall, Maverick scored 81 percent on the review aggregator.

The Wrap however, one particular Top Gun quirk that has stuck with the franchise to this day:

In the end, Top Gun: Maverick becomes a worthy sequel as it succeeds and fails in the same ways [wie sein Vorgänger]. He’s another […] military commercial, which feels like every WWII film was fed to an artificial intelligence. And the flight sequences are breathtaking enough to make you forget these men and women are acting in combat scenarios that start wars.

As I said, the response is basically positive. Top Gun 2 will also be screened at the Cannes Festival, where Jenny Jecke reports on the blockbuster for Moviepilot, among other things. The regular theatrical release of Top Gun 2 in Germany is on May 26, 2022.
