The Dominican Film Festival enters its fourth edition

It was born in New York, it spread to Montreal and now in addition to the capital it will be seen in other cities

Armando Guareño, the director and creator of the Dominican Film Festival, says that “more than 400 projects (mostly short films) both from the diaspora and from the country itself, applied to participate in the fourth edition of the Dominican Republic Film Festival, which will be It will be held from June 22 to August 1 in rooms of the Palacio del Cine”.

The call closed in mid-May 2022. Then came a sieve from which 150 productions remained, including feature films and short films of different genres. “Here in the capital we will have the festival from June 22 to 30 in the Palacio del Cine rooms of Blue Mall and Ágora Mall. Then it will be in Santiago, from July 7 to 10, at the Technological University of Santiago. The festival moves to La Altagracia, from July 26 to August 1, at the Palacio del Cine Multiplaza de Higüey. And in unison the Duarte province, in San Francisco de Macorís”.

The opening of the event will be on Wednesday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m., under the slogan #RDEsCine, with the screening of the film “Just Breathe”, by Dominican director Félix Limardo, in the Blue Mall of the movie theaters. Palacio del Cine, which will feature the participation of international actress Paulette Hernández and Dominican actor Johnnie Mercedes. In the act, tribute will also be paid to the actress Lumy Lizardo, one of the most versatile artists of Dominican cinema; she who has participated in films, such as: “All Men are the Same, La Bruja, Rubirosa” and her recent international success, “Hotel Coppelia”.

Guareño explained to elCaribe that “the Official Selection of Feature Films includes a group of films that are world premieres of fiction and documentaries in some cases. Precisely in the pre-selection we have been able to observe that it will be a contest especially dedicated to showcasing the talent of established directors together with the new movement of emerging filmmakers”.

The films of the selection:

“Claus”, directed by Nathanael Miñi Pierre Louis JR, the first film shot in Puerto Plata.
“Road to Brujuelas”, by Daniel Polanco.
“Protected”, by Juan Ramón Martínez.
“Toy aficiao”, directed by José Carlos Vargas.
“Queens of Laughter” by Kiki Meléndez and Monchi Herrera.

“Trujillo after Trujillo”, produced by the Audiovisual department of the newspaper El Nuevo Diario.

The Official Short Film Competition Made Here has 25 projects produced by independent filmmakers; 16 world premieres and the rest regional and/or national premieres.

The Official Competition of Dominicans in the Diaspora is made up of 12 films: 4 world premieres and the rest of regional and/or national premieres.

In this 4th. edition, the FestCineDR will offer the public a parallel sample called ‘Vívelo en Corto’, of short films of all genres, the sample ‘Horror Isleño’ with world premiere horror and suspense films; and ‘Flowers of this world’, a special show on gender violence, with world and national premieres.

The closing ceremony will be on Thursday, June 30, with the regional premiere of the dramatic comedy “Amalgama”, filmed in the Dominican Republic by prominent Mexican director Carlos Cuaron.
Within the framework of the festival, more than 100 producers, directors, actors and filmmakers will participate in colloquiums, panels, master classes, workshops, as well as the unique opportunity for individual conversations with free access and open to the general public. The cost for ticketing will be 100 Dominican pesos per film and students with identification cards or those over 60 years of age will have free access.

The films selected at FestCineRD 2022 will be screened at the Dominican Film Festival in New York -DFFNYC-.

The mission of FestCineRD is to promote the Dominican film industry to the new generation of film directors, as well as those already established; and strengthen the vital and growing relationship between the economy and culture of the Dominican Republic. In addition, we have the purpose of creating a socio-cultural space for the Dominican film industry, for productions made by and for Dominicans. The RD Dominican Film Festival – FestCineRD -, is a project organized by Miradas RD and the Dominican Film Festival New York, in collaboration with Palacio del Cine.

Awards and jury

The event will feature 4 competitions and awards in the categories of best film, best director, best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress, best short film Made Here, best diaspora short film, best screenplay and special mentions. Fernando Báez Grand Prize and Special Prize in the “Back to Look” section, in memory of the late artist Patricia Ascuasiati.

The jury will be made up of a select group of critics and filmmakers chaired by Alfonso Quiñones and made up of Pavel González, Omar Reyes, Edwin Cruz and Smayle Domínguez.
