The worst Avengers movie on TV today: It was developed in just 45 minutes

Last jar came some background on that Creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) to the light. The source was the book The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for which around 200 contributors were interviewed. A bizarre fact concerns the making of what is arguably the worst Avengers movie to air today, Marvel’s The Avengers 2: Age of Ultron.

The worst Avengers film was developed in under an hour

That second adventures of the Avengers was developed again by Joss Whedon after Part 1 and is surprisingly fast for a hundreds of million dollar blockbuster with enormously high fan expectations: namely in less than an hour. CBR picked up the fact and cites the retelling of Ultron’s genesis. On that fateful day, Joss Whedon was sitting in a British pub and received a text message from his agent:

Do you want to direct Avengers 2?

The big question was asked in an unspectacular way (a text message?), but Whedon was inspired. Within about 45 minutes he had his Ideas for Age of Ultron written down on a notepad (probably decorated with beer foam). Whedon explained the process like this:

I texted back and said, ‘Let’s do this!’ I couldn’t stop the ideas. Newly opened, they flew [mir] easy to.

The result was the story of the computer system Ultron (in the comics it was Hank Pym) developed by Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), which developed a dangerous life of its own through the combination with the artificial intelligence from Loki’s scepter. The one in the original Ultron voiced by The Blacklist star James Spader seeks to create peace on earth by wiping out humans.

While Ultron was hugely successful at the box office ($1.4 billion worldwide), it doesn’t enjoy a particularly good reputation in the MCU canon.

Marvel Story: Is Age of Ultron Really the Worst Avengers Movie?

At Moviepilot, Avengers 2 is indeed the lowest-rated film by the MCU team, but still gets a rating of 7.1 points (while Infinity War has a 7.8, for example). Ultron also ranks last on the review aggregators Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.

To the common criticisms belongs the torn story. It suffers from the growing MCU, offers hardly any memorable elements and even gives away the very well cast villain.

This will certainly not be due to Joss Whesond’s short brainstorming sessions alone, but numerous statements from the director indicate that he was at odds with a return to the MCU and from the process of production “was knocked down” (via Variety ). So perhaps one of the core problems of the film lay buried in the pub that day when Joss Whedon (too) quickly replied to a text message…
