Santo Domingo.- Violence against women was the most reported crime during the past year 2021, with approximately 87 thousand complaints throughout the country. The Santo Domingo province leads the largest number, followed by Santiago and the National District.
So far this year, at least 51 women have been killed by their partners or ex-partners. Twenty-third of the murderers have committed suicide.
This figure was offered by the director of the Attention Unit for Victims of Gender Violence, of the Attorney General’s Office, Ana Andrea Villa Camacho, during a special participation in the “No se Diga Más” program, which is broadcast Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 2:00 pm, on Top Latina 101.7 fm, in light of the fact that the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women will be celebrated on November 25.
Regarding the complaints that the Attorney General’s Office receives each year, Villa Camacho explained that 70% end up being prosecuted, for which reason the authorities “are working to ensure that more cases are prosecuted, with transparent and armored investigations in order to obtain sentences against people who violate Law 24-97”.
However, she understands that punishment is not what will solve the problem of gender violence, but through education on equality.
“Violence against women is a criminal phenomenon that lacerates women, children, and men, which means that this other pandemic is a fact that affects the entire society,” she stressed.
He pointed out that, according to studies, after the covid pandemic, violence against women and girls has increased.
He also said that just like women, men also receive mistreatment and that, in most cases, it is psychological.
“Men are not being murdered by women, they are being murdered because of their condition, it is women, according to the numbers,” lamented Villa Camacho.
