The Viennese City Councilor for Culture, Veronica Kaup-Hasler, managed the surprise. She had only announced a decision about the future lines for the medium-sized theaters Schauspielhaus, Werk X and Jungle at the beginning of June; in a hastily convened press conference, she presented them on Thursday. And hardly anyone would have expected the result.
Well-known names – like the successful director Sara Ostertag, who had applied for the theater – are missing. From the summer of 2023, the Kellertheater in Porzellangasse, once established by Hans Gratzer and now part of George Tabori’s circle, will be directed by a highly heterogeneous quartet that was formed in Germany: Marie Bues, Thomas Herzberg, Martina Grohmann and Mazlum Nergiz . There are already connections to the theater through Nergiz: he won the Hans Gratzer grant in 2021 with his play “Coma”. And the appointment committee included the director of the Residenztheater, Andreas Beck, the former director of the theatre.
As in the other cases, the vote was unanimous. Veronica Kaup-Hasler therefore followed the jury’s recommendations.
In the jungle children’s and youth theater, Anna Horn will follow Corinne Eckenstein, who has not sought a contract extension after signals from the cultural office. Horn, born in Munich in 1977, has been deputy head of the Burgtheaterstudio since 2019.
And Esther Holland-Merten, born in Berlin in 1977, is moving from the WUK to the Werk X Meidling and Petersplatz venue network. The dramaturge often worked with director Dieter Boyer, adviser to ex-City Councilor for Culture Andreas Mailath-Pokorny. Although she only applied for Meidling, she was probably suggested to run both houses.
