"Escalating corona situation": Infectiologists speak out in an open letter

+ The effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines currently approved in the EU in the defense of Covid-19 is high, especially with regard to serious and fatal courses of disease.

+ The key position of vaccination for the prevention of corona infections is currently for both
Individuals as well as society as a whole with no alternative.

+ The data on the effectiveness and tolerability of Covid-19 vaccines is excellent and in the global,
evidence-based scientific community undisputed. The signing professional associations ÖGACH, ÖGIT and ÖGHMP fully subscribe to this.

+ Infections in vaccinated people occur, but are less common and usually easier to progress than the disease in non-vaccinated people. In the case of fully immunized people, the probability of dying from COVID-19 is only given in rare cases in very old or immunocompromised patients.

+ People who have received 2 partial vaccinations are generally less likely to transmit the virus than non-vaccinated people in the event of an infection. After the 3rd vaccination there is a further significant decrease in the risk of infection as well as in serious and fatal courses of infection. This means that those who have been vaccinated make the main contribution to containing the pandemic.

+ Critical scientific publications on these topics are discussed within the listed professional societies on the basis of evidence-based knowledge and, if necessary, accepted for general opinion-forming.

+ Calls and recommendations for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19 that do not correspond to the current state of science are not only perceived by the undersigning professional associations as factually incorrect, but also sharply rejected in view of their polarizing and health-endangering potential.

+ The necessary requirements and measures to control the pandemic as well as their political and social implementation must be carried out promptly and effectively. Furthermore
This must be done in direct and timely coordination with the relevant experts from the fields of infectiology, virology, epidemiology, hygiene and preventive medicine, vaccinology and public
Health done.

+ In addition, compliance with the hygiene measures recommended since the beginning of the pandemic, such as keeping your distance, wearing an FFP-2 mask, hand hygiene and indoor ventilation, is an essential contribution to containing the pandemic.

This open letter is signed by representatives of the following institutions: Austrian Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (ÖGACH), Austrian Society for Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medicine (ÖGIT), Austrian Society for Hygiene, Microbiology and Preventive Medicine (ÖGHMP).
