The new findings from the secured chats made the events “appear in a far worse light”. “What seems to have happened in Cologne-Ehrenfeld is not possible at all,” said Reul. From his point of view, this cannot be explained by boasting and showing off by young men, as interpreted by a lawyer.

He seriously doubts the inner demeanor and suitability of the police officers, said Reul. “I will not tolerate such an understanding of service”. The attitude suggested there has no place in the police. Reul quoted the message from a policeman: “And you just clapped …”

Suspicious police officers all come from the police station in Cologne-Ehrenfeld

The Cologne police will now work out an intervention concept. The chief of police wrote a letter to the staff, and the head of inspection had personal interviews.

All the suspicious police officers came from the police station in Cologne-Ehrenfeld. They are between 24 and 40 years old. Four of them are police officers on probation. It will be easier to part with them if the allegations are confirmed.

The Cologne Green MP Berivan Aymaz spoke of a devastating impression. “The police in North Rhine-Westphalia are not a group of thugs,” said FDP member Marc Lürbke.

The investigation began after the death of a 59-year-old. Five police officers are suspected of being excessively violent against the man on April 24.

In the chats, the content of which has been confirmed by the German Press Agency, two officers are said to have decided to go on a joint patrol. “We’ll definitely arrest someone and destroy someone”.

One of the police officers reportedly wrote after a deployment in December 2020 that he “gave the Turk a kick yesterday.” “Seriously, he flew hard. Send you pictures of his face tomorrow.”

In the aftermath of the more than 4.7 million missions that the police in North Rhine-Westphalia completed in 2020, around 4500 complaints about police actions were received, reported Reul. After an intensive examination of these complaints, indications of disciplinary or criminal behavior were found in 370 cases.
