Flood Risk: Six Districts Under Yellow Warning Due to Rain | Bad weather

The districts of Viseu, Porto, Vila Real, Viana do Castelo, Aveiro and Braga are this Wednesday under yellow warning due to the forecast of periods of sometimes heavy rain, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA). This notice will be in effect between 09:00 and 15:00 this Wednesday.

The districts of Braga, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo and Porto are once again under yellow warning between 06:00 and 12:00 on Thursday due to showers, sometimes heavy, which could be hail and accompanied by thunderstorms. The IPMA also issued a yellow warning for the districts of Viana do Castelo, Porto, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra and Braga due to maritime agitation, with waves from the west of 4 to 4.5 meters expected between 12:00 on Thursday on Friday and 12:00 on Friday.

Due to the sea turmoil, the inlets at Caminha, Esposende, Vila Praia de Ancara, Póvoa do Varzim, Vila do Conde and Ericeira are closed to all navigation. According to data available on the Navy’s website, the Figueira da Foz inlet is restricted to vessels of less than 11 meters in length.

The eastern group (São Miguel and Santa Maria) of the Azores is also under yellow warning because of the maritime agitation until 9 pm today and the central group (Terceira, Graciosa, Faial, Pico and S. Jorge) due to strong wind between the 9am and 6pm this Wednesday.

The yellow warning, the least serious, is issued by the IPMA whenever there is a risk situation for certain activities depending on the weather situation. The forecast of rain and sea unrest led the National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) to issue a warning to the population on Tuesday for the worsening weather conditions.

In a note, the ANEPC, based on information from the IPMA, warns of the forecast of precipitation throughout the territory until the end of the morning of Thursday. In view of the forecast meteorological situation, Civil Protection warns of the possibility of flooding in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to obstruction of drainage systems, as well as the occurrence of floods, potentiated by the overflow of the bed of some water courses , rivers and streams.

The ANEPC also warns against the dragging of loose objects onto the roadways or the detachment of mobile or poorly secured structures, due to strong wind, which could cause accidents with vehicles in circulation or passers-by on the public road. It also warns you to pay special attention while driving, due to the slippery surface and possible formation of water sheets.
