The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) this Wednesday issued a warning to the population due to forecasts of cold weather and rain for the next few days.

In a statement, the Civil Protection refers that, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA), cold weather and precipitation are forecast for the next few days, namely a drop in temperature, with minimums below the average for the time of year, more frequent periods of rain on Friday, which could be accompanied by thunder and hail, wind and formation of ice and frost in the interior of the country.

ANEPC also points out that snowfall is expected above 600/800 meters in the North and Center regions and above 800/1000 meters in the southern region on Thursday, temporarily descending to 400/600 meters from the end of the afternoon. .

Civil Protection warns the population of the risks of poisoning by inhaling gases due to inadequate ventilation, fires in homes resulting from the misuse of fireplaces and braziers or breakdowns in electrical circuits and recommends special attention to the most vulnerable population groups, such as children, the elderly and people with chronic pathologies and the homeless population.

The authorities also draw attention to the dangers of slippery floors and the possible formation of water and ice sheets, as well as the possibility of falling branches or trees due to strong winds.

ANEPC also advises citizens to avoid prolonged exposure to the cold, to wear several layers of clothing and to be cautious about physical activity outside.
