Found dead right-wing military who was on the run in Belgium

Right-wing military Jürgen Conings, who was on the run after threatening a virologist in Belgium, “was found dead,” Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder announced this Sunday, confirming the identity of the corpse discovered in the east of the country. .

This confirmation follows a press release from the Belgian federal prosecutor’s office indicating that, “according to the first elements of the investigation”, the body found in eastern Belgium is that of the military officer Jürgen Conings, “disappeared since May 17, 2021 ” and wanted for over a month.

“The discovery of the lifeless body puts an end to five weeks of insecurity and threat,” said Minister Ludivine Dedonder and Belgian Armed Forces Defense Chief Michel Hofman in a joint statement.

According to the AFP news agency, the first information attributes the cause of death to a suicide by firearm, a situation that must be confirmed by forensic expertise, the prosecutor explained.

This case has shaken the country’s defense because of failures in the surveillance of radicalized elements within the Belgian army.

Considered dangerous, the 46-year-old far-right military Jürgen Conings was registered by the Belgian terrorist threat analysis organization (Ocam) and was suspected of wanting to attack representatives of the Belgian state and Belgian virologist Marc Van Ranst, a specialist highlighted due to the covid-19 pandemic.
