Photographer João Rodrigues is one of the winners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest, winning the prize for best image in the reptile and amphibian behavior category. The photograph shows two salamanders spawning in the underground waters of the Minde Sea, in the municipality of Alcanena, an image taken in January 2021.

“I was photographing fairy shrimp and while I was photographing these animals, I see a figure coming from the bush. I was even scared. When I noticed it was a couple of salamanders, they were copulating and they started to swim in front of me. It was time to adjust the camera and take the photograph”, he explains in statements to TSF.

After seeing the final result, João Rodrigues wanted to participate in the oldest wildlife photography contest in the world, where some of his idols are usually present. I was hoping for an “honorable mention” for the particularity of the visual content. “I usually use photographs for contests when I see something I’ve never seen before,” he confesses.

And so it was with “surprise” and unexpectedly that he received the news that he had been one of the winners. “I couldn’t believe it. It was curious because I had the winner’s notification in my email spam box. It was only two weeks before I discovered it in spam because I had no hope. I was falling off my chair,” he admits.

Currently, João Rodrigues works as a photojournalist and has a production company, Chimera Visuals. The 32-year-old is now working on a project for National Geographic and is getting ready to launch, next year, a webseries about Portuguese marine life.
