Fruit and Vegetable Union denies the risk of potato shortage in Russia - Rossiyskaya Gazeta

Russia this year does not face a potato shortage, said Mikhail Glushkov, director of the National Union of Fruit and Vegetable Producers (Fruit and Vegetable Union).

He noted that the harvest is still ongoing, but there will be no shortage of potatoes – according to forecasts, the harvest will be at the level of last year.

“There will be enough potatoes for everyone, but we must wait until the end of October to understand the situation: now it is too early to talk about how many potatoes there will be and what quality they will be, because the harvest continues,” Glushkov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He noted that about 60-65% of the cultivated area was harvested, since the process was hampered by bad weather. The prices for potatoes are also related to this – harvesting is going slower than usual. According to Glushakov, potatoes may not be enough for processors, this will not affect the population in any way. He added that about 500 thousand tons of potatoes are imported into the country every year, but the harvest is always enough for autumn and winter.

According to Rosstat, last year the gross harvest of potatoes in Russia fell by 11.3%. At the same time, since the beginning of the year, potatoes have added more than 38% in price, and a rise in prices has been observed in the last two weeks, when a seasonal decline in prices was expected.
